We have a data wall!
In PLTs we discussed what were our non-negotiables in sentence structure from the writing progressions. What did we believe was essential. It became evident at this point that all indicators within CrT were informing our judgements, but staff still wanted to create the wall around this micro level before expanding into the use of the whole CrT indicators. We focused our attention within 'text forms and features.'
After each team agreed on their non-negotiables, these were then shared at the next PLT. Did we now still agree on our non-negotiables around sentence structure (in light of what teams have chosen before and after)? Do we see the continuum and are able to make comparisons so that we can move students along and back?
Teams then created an explanation of the indicators and developed student examples in light of what the progression indicators were wanting. These were also shared with teams across the school and amendments were made accordingly.
What percentage do we believe students need to achieve in this space to be at a specific level? We were guided by the 80% that instructional leaders have used in the past. Each team (including their Teacher Assistant) then spent time plotting their students, bringing to mind multiple samples of work from across the KLA's (not just English writing time). Immediately a conversation followed once the team had the opportunity to step back - what do we notice, what do we wonder?
As our LC meet next week we plan to reflect on the following:
- What did you think about the process other schools undertook (shared via email)? What did we learn from them? In-put gained from our EO's to avoid looping.
- What are our Challenges? i.e. The want for benchmark placing.
- Our Data Cards - what else do we need to know about each student?
- What whole school practices do we need to develop as a school around the wall?
(Parameters we could consider: How often do we look at the wall (twice a term? Every PLT) - few weeks for progress and to teach what is next. To ensure USE and ACCOUNTABILITY TO GROWTH.
- When do we move students? At least 3 samples before moving? More if possible. Evidence of growth needs to be verbalized and agreed upon?
- What data do we use? What is our understanding of current data (the last 3-4 weeks)?
