Enhancing Education Through Learning Walks and Talks

In the pursuit of fostering continuous improvement and collaboration in education, Learning Walks and Talks have emerged as a trans-formative practice. These dedicated sessions, quarantined every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:30 am to 11:00 am, have provided a structured yet dynamic framework for observing, reflecting, and enhancing teaching and learning processes.

Learning Walks and Talks

Initially the Learning Collaborative Lead Team engaged in the Learning Walks and Talks  aimed to establish a clear purpose for future professional learning and a consistent approach. This also gave the Team an opportunity to observe the Third Teacher, and how students use this to answer the 5 questions about their learning.

Professional Learning

Staff Meeting and professional learning opportunities were held to support our staff members understand the underlying purpose of these walks. Discussions centered around the types of student responses anticipated and how these responses align with the principles of the Assessment Waterfall. This framework served as a guide to identify where students stood in their learning journey, accountable talk and what steps could be taken to support their growth.

Empowering Grade Teams: Collaboration and Insight

Grade teachers were given the opportunity to participate in Learning Walks and Talks within their respective grades. These sessions provided a valuable lens through which teachers could observe classroom dynamics, teaching strategies, and student engagement. Following each walk, debriefing sessions with members of the Learning Collaborative Team allowed teachers to discuss their observations, analyse student responses, and discuss future directions for instructional practices.

Broadening Perspectives: Cross-Grade Engagement

Building on the insights gained within their own grades, teachers then embarked on Learning Walks and Talks across other grade levels. This cross-grade engagement offered a broader perspective on teaching strategies and student learning. Once again, debriefing sessions provided a platform for reflection, fostering a culture of shared learning and continuous improvement.

Reflections and Impact

The structured yet collaborative nature of Learning Walks and Talks has created a ripple effect within the school community. Teachers have reported a deeper understanding of student learning processes, enhanced collaboration with and colleagues.
